DALLAS, Texas — Gary Fickes, former Tarrant County Commissioner and longtime public servant, died at the age of 75 in Dallas. Fickes served as a Tarrant County Commissioner for 18 years and was mayor of Southlake from 1989 to 1996.

Fickes represented District 3 on the Tarrant County Commissioners Court as a member of the Republican Party. During his tenure, he prioritized infrastructure improvements, community development, transportation, and public safety initiatives.

Before his time as commissioner, Fickes served as Southlake’s mayor for seven years. His leadership contributed significantly to the city’s growth and urban planning efforts.

First elected to the commissioners court in 2006, Fickes was one of the longest-serving members. He announced in 2024 that he would not seek re-election, citing a desire to spend more time with family.

Tarrant County Judge Tim O’Hare expressed condolences, calling Fickes “a pillar of our community” whose contributions will have a lasting impact.

Fickes advocated for road improvements and economic development in Northeast Tarrant County and supported fiscal responsibility and transparent governance.

He held a business degree from Sam Houston State University and participated actively in local charities and civic events.

In 2024, the Tarrant County Northeast Courthouse in Hurst was renamed in Fickes’ honor.

The family has requested privacy, with funeral arrangements to be announced later. The Tarrant County community mourns Fickes’ passing and extends sympathies to his loved ones.
