MANILA, Philippines – A deepfake video falsely portraying Senator Risa Hontiveros endorsing an investment scheme surfaced on social media, her office confirmed on Aug.9.
The video features a fabricated endorsement of an individual identified as Gloria Mendoza, who allegedly promotes various investment plans. Hontiveros has not supported any investment activities or individuals associated with the video, according to an official statement.
Using artificial intelligence, the video mimics Hontiveros’ voice and appearance to present a realistic—but false—representation, misleading viewers into believing its authenticity. Her office reiterated that the senator remains uninvolved in any form of investment promotion.
Authorities have been notified of the incident and are investigating the use of deepfake technology to misrepresent the senator. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) also issued advisories warning the public against investment scams that utilize manipulated media.
Hontiveros’ office urged the public to verify information from credible sources before sharing or acting on online content. They emphasized that digital manipulation poses increasing risks to public trust and safety.
The senator’s team is pursuing legal action to address the misuse of her image and protect her reputation.
Officials encouraged the public to report suspicious materials to appropriate authorities as part of ongoing efforts to combat digital fraud and misinformation.
