Erik Spoelstra will serve as head coach of the USA Basketball Men’s National Team through 2028, covering both the 2027 FIBA World Cup and the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
USA Basketball announced Spoelstra’s appointment on October 14, 2025, marking his first tenure as head coach of the national team. He previously served as an assistant coach during the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Spoelstra has an extensive NBA background as head coach of the Miami Heat, leading the team to multiple NBA championships. His appointment places him among a select group of coaches to lead the U.S. team during a home Olympics, alongside figures such as Bob Knight.
USA Basketball cited Spoelstra’s tactical expertise and proven leadership as key factors in his selection. He will succeed Steve Kerr as national team head coach.
Spoelstra expressed his gratitude and enthusiasm for the opportunity to guide Team USA. His leadership will focus on preparing the team for major international competitions and sustaining its record of success.
The 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles will mark the city’s first hosting of the event since 1984.
Spoelstra began his coaching career with the Miami Heat organization after playing college basketball at the University of Portland. He advanced from video coordinator to head coach, earning recognition for his emphasis on defense, teamwork, and strategy.
Under Spoelstra’s leadership, Team USA will begin preparations for the 2027 FIBA World Cup in Doha, Qatar, as part of its long-term competitive plan.
