STUTTGART, Germany — Filipino tennis player Alex Eala will face Filipina-Canadian Leylah Fernandez on Monday in the opening round of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, marking their first meeting on the Women’s Tennis Association tour.
The match is scheduled at the Porsche Arena, with timing dependent on earlier matches in the day’s order of play.
Eala, 20, entered the main draw as a late replacement for China’s Qinwen Zheng, who withdrew due to injury. Eala advanced through the qualifying rounds and most recently competed in the Upper Austria Ladies Linz Open, where she reached the second round.
Fernandez, 23, enters the tournament ranked higher and holds five WTA titles. She reached the Round of 16 in the Charleston Open prior to Stuttgart and was a finalist at the 2021 US Open.
Eala previously achieved a career-high ranking of No. 29 and is currently ranked No. 46, while Fernandez has reached as high as No. 13 in her career.
The winner of the match will advance to the second round to face either Italy’s Jasmine Paolini or a qualifier.
The Stuttgart tournament features several top-ranked players, including Elena Rybakina, Coco Gauff, Iga Swiatek, Elina Svitolina, Mirra Andreeva, Karolina Muchova, and Ekaterina Alexandrova.
The event serves as part of the clay-court season leading into the French Open, scheduled from May 24 to June 7 in Paris.
