MANILA, Philippines– The Union of Peoples’ Lawyers in Mindanao on Friday welcomed the International Criminal Court Appeals Chamber’s decision to deny former President Rodrigo Duterte’s request for interim release while he awaits the confirmation of charges hearing in The Hague.

In its statement, the group said the ruling affirms the earlier decision of Pre-Trial Chamber I, which ordered Duterte’s continued detention as ICC judges review allegations linked to killings during the “war on drugs.”

The Appeals Chamber ruled that Duterte must remain in custody due to what it described as ongoing risks to victims, witnesses and the court’s proceedings. The UPLM said the judgment protects the integrity of the process and prevents possible interference.

The group also noted that ICC judges rejected the defense request for temporary release on health and humanitarian grounds, citing the seriousness of the charges and the need for full cooperation with international justice mechanisms.

According to UPLM, the ruling offers reassurance to families affected by the anti-drug campaign. The group urged the ICC to move forward with the confirmation of charges hearing and pursue the arrest of alleged co-perpetrators.
