UVALDE COUNTY, Texas — A Texas Department of Public Safety K-9 helped locate and apprehend a suspected MS-13 gang member after tracking him for nearly five miles in Uvalde County earlier this month, state officials said.
On July 6, DPS K-9 Bona and her handler assisted the U.S. Border Patrol in searching for a person who authorities said had entered the country illegally.
After following a trail across rugged terrain for nearly five miles, Bona led officers to Brian Oswaldo Bustillo Mejia, an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador. According to DPS, authorities later identified Bustillo Mejia as a member of the MS-13 criminal gang.
DPS said the apprehension highlights the role of specialized K-9 teams in supporting border security operations and assisting partner agencies in locating individuals who attempt to evade law enforcement.
Video released by the agency shows Bona and her handler working together throughout the search as they tracked the suspect across the terrain.
