DALLAS, Texas — The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has informed the North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA) that it will not renew an agreement assigning state troopers to patrol NTTA toll roads when the contract expires at the end of August, according to a June 1 letter.

The North Texas Tollway Authority manages more than 150 miles of toll roads across the Dallas-Fort Worth region, including the Dallas North Tollway, President George Bush Turnpike, and Sam Rayburn Tollway.

In the letter sent to NTTA Chief Executive Officer James Hofmann, DPS Colonel Freeman Martin said the decision followed a statewide operational review. He said DPS must maintain flexibility to deploy personnel and resources in response to changing security needs.

Martin said the current agreement restricts that flexibility and does not align with DPS statewide operational requirements.

The agreement between DPS and NTTA provides for state troopers to patrol tollway facilities under a dedicated arrangement. That arrangement will end unless both parties reach a new agreement before the expiration date.
