WASHINGTON — A large temporary mixed martial arts arena has been constructed on the White House South Lawn in preparation for a UFC event scheduled for Sunday, according to reporting and official filings describing the project.

The structure features an eight-sided cage modeled on the UFC “Octagon,” measuring about 30 feet (9 meters) in diameter. It includes wire-mesh sides, padded corner posts with sponsor logos, and surrounding seating intended for more than 4,000 spectators.

Overhead, organizers installed a lighting and production rig referred to as “The Claw,” which extends more than 90 feet (27 meters) and includes lighting systems, speakers, wiring, and large screens for live viewing of the fights.

The White House said the event is scheduled to coincide with the 80th birthday of President Donald Trump and the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Organizers said the UFC will cover the direct costs of the event, though a National Park Service court filing stated that multiple federal agencies have assigned personnel and resources to support preparations.

The filing also stated that work on the South Lawn structure has required tens of thousands of labor hours and more than $60 million in construction-related activity. The National Park Service oversees the site and is involved in legal proceedings challenging the event.

The arena occupies most of the South Lawn, an area typically used for Marine One landings and public events such as the White House Easter Egg Roll. Temporary infrastructure also includes seating risers and lighting systems installed around the perimeter of the site.

Organizers expect about 4,000 attendees for Sunday’s fights. A separate viewing area at the Ellipse is expected to accommodate more than 120,000 people through a ticket lottery system, according to event planning details.

Pre-event activities include a press conference at the Lincoln Memorial and a ceremonial weigh-in at the Ellipse. Organizers also plan additional demonstrations as part of the weekend programming.

Crews have also altered surrounding White House grounds, including removal of lawn areas near the South Lawn construction zone and temporary changes to adjacent outdoor spaces.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio signed a cooperation agreement with UFC that outlines collaboration on training, fitness, and youth development initiatives.

Organizers said the event will proceed regardless of weather conditions. The forecast includes hot, humid conditions with possible thunderstorms. Event production plans include partial overhead covering for the cage area.

UFC President Dana White said the event will continue even in severe weather conditions.
