In a high-stakes game in the National League Division Series, the Los Angeles Dodgers secured a decisive 8-0 win against the San Diego Padres. This victory at Petco Park in San Diego ensured the series is now tied at two games apiece. The game took place in front of a record-breaking crowd of 47,773 spectators, marking a significant moment as the Dodgers avoided elimination for the third consecutive season.

The Dodgers entered the game facing a challenging situation. Key pitchers, including Shohei Ohtani, Tyler Glasnow, Clayton Kershaw, Tony Gonsolin, Gavin Stone, and Dustin May, were unavailable due to injuries. As a result, the team opted for a bullpen game strategy. Eight pitchers combined forces to shut out the Padres, allowing only seven hits. This marked the eighth instance in MLB postseason history where a team deployed at least eight pitchers to achieve a shutout victory.

Evan Phillips, the fifth pitcher in the rotation, played a crucial role in the Dodgers’ win. He retired all five batters he faced in the fifth and sixth innings, earning him the victory. The Padres struggled offensively, going 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position. Padres manager Mike Shildt acknowledged the Dodgers’ strong performance, noting the team’s inability to deliver timely hits.

San Diego’s ace, Dylan Cease, took the mound on three days’ rest for the first time in his major league career. He allowed three runs and four hits over 1 2/3 innings, ultimately taking the loss. Despite demonstrating impressive speed and skill, the Dodgers managed to capitalize on his pitches.

The Dodgers’ offensive efforts were led by Mookie Betts, who hit a four-seam fastball from Cease 403 feet for a home run. The team added two more runs in the second inning, with Gavin Lux walking and Kiké Hernández advancing Lux to third with a single. Shohei Ohtani’s single drove in Lux, leading Shildt to replace Cease with Bryan Hoeing.

Betts continued to shine, hitting Hoeing’s first pitch into right field for an RBI single. The Dodgers extended their lead to 5-0 when Max Muncy doubled, and Will Smith followed with a home run. The eighth inning saw more action as Muncy was hit by a pitch, advanced on an error, and scored on a squeeze bunt by Tommy Edman. Lux capped off the inning with a home run against Padres pitcher Wandy Peralta.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts opted not to play first baseman Freddie Freeman, citing “overall body soreness.” Roberts emphasized the importance of player well-being over star status.
