DALLAS — Health experts are cautioning families in North Texas about a seasonal surge in respiratory viruses as spring break travel ramps up. Officials say crowded airports, long road trips, and packed tourist destinations are contributing to the rise in illnesses.

Dr. Zachary Most of Children’s Health in Dallas noted in a FOX 4 live interview that flu and RSV cases are continuing later than usual this year, with symptoms lingering into mid-March. “We are still seeing flu and RSV cases, even though it’s mid-March. We’re seeing a late tail end to those seasons as we’re approaching spring,” he said.

Recent Case Numbers:

  • Rhinovirus: 357 cases
  • Influenza: 150 cases
  • RSV: 106 cases
  • COVID-19: 24 cases

Dr. Most emphasized the importance of precautions to stay healthy, including:

  • Staying current on vaccinations for flu, RSV, and COVID-19.
  • Bringing hand sanitizer, fever-reducing medications, and fluids while traveling.
  • Considering masks in crowded settings.

He also highlighted warning signs that should prompt medical attention:

  • Fever lasting more than four days
  • Fever in a child under three months old
  • Difficulty breathing or signs of dehydration
  • Extreme lethargy or difficulty waking

While most viral infections are mild and self-limiting, Dr. Most urged parents to remain vigilant, especially during high-travel periods like spring break.

Families are encouraged to balance outdoor activities and travel with safety measures to minimize virus exposure during the busy holiday week.
