Denmark will formally summon the United States ambassador in Copenhagen following the appointment of a special U.S. envoy to Greenland, Danish officials said.

The Danish government said the move seeks clarification on Washington’s decision to assign a dedicated envoy to Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, and on how the role will operate within existing diplomatic arrangements.

Officials said the meeting will address the scope and objectives of the envoy’s mandate and how the United States plans to coordinate with both Denmark and Greenland’s government in Nuuk. Denmark retains responsibility for foreign policy and defense matters involving Greenland under the country’s constitutional framework.

Greenland exercises self-rule over most internal affairs, including health, education, natural resources and environmental policy, while Denmark oversees defense, foreign relations and monetary policy. Danish officials said any foreign diplomatic engagement involving Greenland typically passes through Copenhagen.

The appointment of the envoy follows renewed U.S. attention to Greenland’s strategic role in the Arctic. The United States maintains Thule Air Base in northwestern Greenland under long-standing defense agreements with Denmark, supporting missile warning and space surveillance missions.

U.S. President Donald Trump previously drew attention to Greenland during his administration, including public remarks about U.S. strategic interests in the territory. Danish and Greenlandic leaders rejected suggestions at the time that Greenland could be purchased, stating that the territory is not for sale.

The Danish foreign ministry said summoning the ambassador is a standard diplomatic practice intended to ensure transparency and clear communication. Officials said the discussion will focus on how U.S. engagement with Greenland will align with existing agreements and Denmark’s responsibilities within the kingdom.

Denmark and the United States are NATO allies and cooperate on defense and security matters in the Arctic and North Atlantic.
