DALLAS, Texas –Two individuals were sentenced to a cumulative 15 years in federal prison related to the fentanyl-induced death of a 15-year-old from Carrollton, Texas.
As reported by the Department of Justice, Lizbeth Prieto, 19, and Cristian Lopez, 24, were held responsible for providing the potent synthetic opioid that led to the teenager’s untimely death.
Fentanyl, a drug significantly more potent than morphine, has been at the center of rising overdose rates across the United States.
Prosecutors presented evidence showing that the defendants knowingly distributed the drug to the victim. The court heard testimony from law enforcement officers and medical experts who detailed the devastating impact of fentanyl on the body. The drug, often mixed with other substances, can be fatal even in small doses.
