DALLAS — A 49-year-old woman was arrested and charged with murder after police said she fatally shot her 28-year-old daughter during a physical dispute at a home Monday afternoon.
Dallas police responded to a 911 call just before 4 p.m. in the 800 block of Green Cove Lane after a caller reported that her mother had shot her. Officers who were working nearby arrived within minutes.
Investigators found Tabatha Jones in a bedroom with a gunshot wound. She was transported to a hospital, where she died about an hour later.
Police arrested Shanika Battle at the residence. Authorities said Battle and Jones were the only people inside the home when officers arrived.
According to an arrest affidavit, investigators recovered a pistol in the living room near Battle’s purse after obtaining a search warrant. Officers also located a fired .380-caliber cartridge casing in the hallway outside the victim’s room.
During a police interview, Battle reportedly told investigators she became upset after her daughter took an alcoholic beverage that belonged to her. Police said the disagreement escalated from a verbal argument into a physical confrontation.
The affidavit states that Battle admitted the firearm belonged to her and said she removed it from her purse to “scare” her daughter, although she initially denied firing the weapon.
Battle is being held in the Dallas County Jail on a murder charge.
