The Dallas comedy community is grieving the loss of Henry Cruz, an up-and-coming comedian who tragically died in a hit-and-run incident last weekend.
According to Dallas police, Cruz was walking along Elm Street near Deep Ellum at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 3, when a driver struck him and fled the scene. Cruz was taken to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Police have not made any arrests and continue to search for the responsible driver. One week after the incident, Shark’s Comedy Club in Downtown Dallas hosted a memorial show attended by Cruz’s friends, family, and fans, who filled the venue in his memory.
“This week has been incredibly tough. I haven’t been able to sleep or eat,” shared Angel Hernandez, Cruz’s childhood friend. “I knew he had many friends, but seeing everyone support his family is truly amazing.”
The gathering celebrated Cruz’s spirit through laughter, as performers recounted stories, shared jokes, and concluded with a standing ovation to honor their friend.
“Today was the funeral and burial, and that was really difficult,” said Sagan Butler, a close friend and fellow comedian. “This feels like a breath of fresh air.”
Organizers pledged that 10% of all food and drink sales at Frankie’s will go to support Cruz’s family, supplementing over $10,000 raised via a GoFundMe campaign for funeral costs. A memorial has been established near the location of Cruz’s accident on Elm Street. Friends hope the joy and love expressed at his memorial will continue to honor his legacy.
“I’ll never perform a show without you again, because you’re with me always,” remarked a comedian from the stage.
