CASTROVILLE, Texas — Dallas-based data center operator CyrusOne plans to build a $500 million data center in Castroville, marking the company’s sixth facility in the San Antonio area, according to a state filing.
The one-story, 460,000-square-foot facility will be built at 3397 U.S. 90 West and is scheduled for completion by June 2027, based on a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
Medina County property records show CyrusOne owns at least 244 acres in the county. The company declined to comment on the project. Information contained in state filings is preliminary and subject to change.
CyrusOne currently operates data centers on San Antonio’s West Side and far West Side and has eight data center campuses across Texas, according to the company’s website.
The company previously proposed a data center project on about 200 acres east of Interstate 35 near San Marcos in Hays County but faced opposition from area residents.
CyrusOne’s planned Castroville facility will join a growing concentration of data centers in Medina County, where Microsoft has acquired more than 1,000 acres for multiple projects.
State filings show Microsoft is constructing several data centers in the county, including projects valued at about $712.6 million at 18844 FM 1957, a $400 million facility at 3580 FM 471 North, two buildings totaling 489,400 square feet at 2995 U.S. 90 West, and two additional facilities totaling 490,000 square feet along County Road 381 with an estimated cost of $700 million.
West Bexar and Medina counties have attracted data center development because of available power and fiber infrastructure and suitable land. Companies including Vantage Data Centers, Valero Energy Corp. and CloudHQ also have announced projects in the region as demand for artificial intelligence and cloud computing infrastructure continues to grow.
