DALLAS — Dallas Animal Services (DAS) is encouraging residents to help care for young kittens as “kitten season” begins this spring.
In 2025, DAS took in more than 2,000 kittens, many too young to stay safely in shelters. To prepare for the seasonal increase, the agency hosted its first-ever Community Kitten Shower on March 22, an event that will now be held annually.
Officials said the event aims to educate the public and recruit more foster caregivers, since kittens need home environments to grow before they can be adopted.
DAS also reminded residents not to immediately take in outdoor kittens, noting that most are not abandoned and are often being cared for by their mothers. Unless the kittens are sick, injured, or in danger, officials said it’s best to leave them where they are.
