TERRELL, Texas— A crash involving an 18-wheeler in Terrell killed three members of Anthony Epperson’s family, prompting federal investigations into the cause and regulatory compliance.

The accident occurred when the truck driver fell asleep at the wheel, according to reports. The victims — Epperson’s daughter, son-in-law, and grandson — died at the scene. Epperson’s granddaughter survived the crash but sustained injuries. She is recovering under Epperson’s care.

Federal authorities, including the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), started an investigation to determine whether driver fatigue caused the incident. Officials are reviewing the trucking company’s compliance with federal safety regulations, including hours-of-service rules.

Epperson said, “I’ve lost my family, and now my focus is on my granddaughter’s recovery and making sure the company responsible is held accountable.”

Epperson is pursuing legal action against the trucking company, which is under scrutiny. Investigators are looking into whether the company enforced proper rest periods or allowed unsafe practices that led to the crash.

A spokesperson from the Truck Safety Coalition said, “Driver fatigue continues to be one of the causes of fatal truck accidents. This loss shows the need for reform and accountability.”

State officials confirmed a review of trucking regulations, focusing on whether state-level measures are needed to prevent incidents on Texas highways.

As the investigation continues, the crash is a reminder of the need to ensure commercial drivers are rested and companies comply with safety laws.
