HAVANA — Cuba experienced its second nationwide power outage in a week on Friday, as the island continues to struggle with a deteriorating electrical grid and ongoing fuel shortages.
Cuba’s Electric Union confirmed the islandwide blackout in a post on X. Authorities also confirmed a nationwide outage on Monday, although officials said the cause remained under investigation.
The latest outage comes as Cuba faces an energy crisis that has disrupted transportation, healthcare and daily life.
Government officials said the country has faced severe fuel shortages since January after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened tariffs on countries that sell or supply oil to Cuba. Cuba produces about 40% of the fuel it requires, while oil deliveries have fallen short of demand.
The government has implemented rolling power outages that in some areas have lasted more than 24 consecutive hours. Public transportation has been significantly reduced, and officials have postponed tens of thousands of surgeries because of the energy shortage.
Cuba has experienced several major blackouts this year, including a nationwide outage in March and another large-scale outage that affected the island’s eastern provinces in May.
Authorities have not yet announced the cause of Friday’s blackout or when full electrical service will be restored.
