MANILA, Philippines– The Commission on Elections (Comelec) in the Philippines has rejected Apollo Quiboloy’s camp’s request for a manual recount of votes. Comelec said the request has no legal basis.
Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia announced the decision during a press conference at the Manila Hotel Tent City. He explained that a manual recount can only be done if an election protest is officially filed.
Israelito Torreon, Quiboloy’s spokesperson and lawyer, earlier claimed that Comelec could order a recount without a formal petition. However, Comelec clarified that the law requires an official protest to begin a recount.
Quiboloy’s camp raised concerns about the election results and wanted a recount. But Comelec emphasized that all election disputes must follow proper legal procedures.
Legal experts also agreed that filing an election protest is required by law before any recount can take place.
Comelec officials stressed the importance of protecting the integrity and transparency of the election process. They said their decision was based on current election laws and procedures.
