MANILA, Philippines– President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is scheduled to sign a law, postponing the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) originally set for Dec 1.
Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairperson George Garcia confirmed the signing, which will take place at 2 p.m. at Malacañang Palace.
Despite the postponement, voter registration for the BSKE will continue until August 10, 2023. Comelec has confirmed that the ongoing registration process remains unchanged.
The law will reset the BSKE to 2026 and extend the terms of current barangay and SK officials. No official reason has been provided for the postponement.
The decision follows consultations among electoral and government bodies. Following the signing, Comelec and other agencies will oversee the implementation of the law and issue guidelines.
The change affects millions of voters and modifies the national electoral schedule. The government will release further updates through official channels.
