AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin City Council on Thursday unanimously approved an ordinance requiring a recurring audit of city operations to improve transparency and track taxpayer dollars.

The ordinance establishes a citywide “comprehensive efficiency assessment,” directing the City Auditor’s Office to contract with outside experts to review management structures, contracting practices, and departmental operations for potential cost savings and service improvements.

Mayor Kirk Watson said the measure combines a “back to basics” approach with modernization efforts intended to maintain public confidence.

The audit must begin within 12 months, and findings and recommendations will be published online. Supporters say the recurring reviews link service evaluations to taxpayer accountability.

Critics, including groups advocating for a charter amendment, argue that an ordinance could be overturned without voter approval. City officials said they expect the audits to identify savings and inform future budget planning.
