HOUSTON, Texas — Christian Menefee has resigned from his position as Harris County Attorney to pursue a seat in the United States Congress.

Menefee, who has held the county attorney role since January 2021, made history as the youngest and first African American elected to the position.

During his tenure, Menefee focused on progressive initiatives such as environmental justice, voting rights, and criminal justice reform, earning recognition for his efforts to advance policies promoting equitable treatment and environmental protection.

Despite his resignation, Menefee will remain in his position as acting county attorney until the Harris County Commissioners Court appoints a successor, as stipulated by the Texas Constitution.

In his announcement, Menefee expressed enthusiasm for his congressional campaign, emphasizing his commitment to addressing national issues like healthcare, education, and climate change.

He stated that his decision to run aligns with his desire to amplify the voices of Texas residents at the federal level.

Under Menefee’s leadership, the Harris County Attorney’s Office played a role in holding polluters accountable and defending marginalized communities.

Meanwhile, Menefee’s congressional campaign is set to focus on healthcare access, education, and climate action, issues that resonate with voters concerned about the future.
