Beijing formally lodged a diplomatic protest on Aug. 8, in response to remarks from Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. concerning a potential conflict involving China, the United States, and Taiwan.
During an interview on his official visit to India, President Marcos stated that the Philippines would “inevitably” become involved in such a conflict due to its geographic proximity to Taiwan and the large population of Filipino workers living there. He also emphasized the urgency of preparing contingency plans, including potential evacuation procedures.
China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned Marcos’s comments, asserting that they contradict the Philippines’ commitment to the one-China policy and threaten regional stability. Officials warned that such statements could strain diplomatic ties between Beijing and Manila.
The Philippine government has not issued a formal response to the protest.
China maintains its claim over Taiwan, while the U.S. follows a policy of strategic ambiguity regarding potential military involvement in a Taiwan-related conflict.
