BEIJING, China– The Chinese government has called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to exercise caution and avoid political bias following the arrest of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.

A statement issued by China’s Foreign Ministry, delivered by spokeswoman Mao Ning, emphasized the importance of the ICC remaining impartial in its legal proceedings.

Mao addressed the media, urging the ICC to avoid politicization and double standards, stressing the need for fairness and justice.

The statement follows Duterte’s detention at Ninoy Aquino International Airport and his subsequent transfer to the ICC Detention Center in the Netherlands, where he is being held in connection with his controversial ‘war on drugs’ policies.

The ICC had issued an international arrest warrant for Duterte, leading to his detention.

China’s statement indicates the country’s close monitoring of the situation and its interest in the outcomes of the legal proceedings.

The former President’s policies during his time in office, particularly his war on drugs, have been divisive.

While some supporters praise his tough stance, critics argue that his methods led to thousands of deaths and violated human rights.

These actions prompted investigations by the ICC, culminating in the current legal proceedings.
