Chevron Corporation, headquartered in Houston, has announced plans to lay off nearly 800 employees at its facilities in the Permian Basin, located in West Texas. These layoffs, scheduled to commence on July 15, will affect staff at three key Chevron locations in Midland County, as confirmed by the Texas Workforce Commission. This development comes as part of Chevron’s broader effort to restructure and streamline its operations, following a strategic decision to move its headquarters from San Ramon, California, to Houston.

The relocation is intended to place Chevron closer to its essential partners and resources, aligning with their strategy to enhance operational efficiency and strengthen recruitment channels from nearby universities and suppliers. Currently, Chevron employs approximately 7,000 individuals in the Houston area, illustrating its significant presence and impact within the local economy. Earlier this year, as reported by Reuters, Chevron informed employees of an overarching plan to reduce its global workforce by 15% to 20% by 2026, aiming to curtail costs and simplify corporate processes.

This upcoming phase of workforce reduction in West Texas follows a similar recent announcement involving the layoff of 600 employees in California, beginning this Sunday. Vice Chairman Mark Nelson has stated that these measures are designed to boost the company’s long-term competitiveness, with an emphasis on embracing technological advancements to enhance work performance and efficiency. While these layoffs reflect challenging adjustments, Chevron remains focused on its vision for a more robust, technologically advanced future.
