LONDON — King Charles III has paid more than £30 million ($39.6 million) in personal taxes since ascending the British throne in September 2022, Buckingham Palace disclosed Thursday in an unprecedented move aimed at increasing transparency.
The disclosure marks the first time a reigning British monarch has publicly revealed the amount of personal tax paid.
Buckingham Palace said the decision forms part of the Royal Household’s commitment to greater financial openness amid heightened public scrutiny of royal finances.
“The amount of tax payable by His Majesty since Accession is more than £30 million,” the palace said in a statement.
Prince William also released his personal tax information for the first time, revealing that he has paid more than £20 million in taxes since inheriting the title of Prince of Wales following Charles’ accession to the throne.
Charles became king in September 2022 after the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
