MANILA, Philippines — Carlos Yulo, a 24-year-old gymnast, has been named the Athlete of the Year by the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA).

Yulo’s exceptional performance at the Paris Olympics, where he secured two gold medals in the men’s floor exercise and vault events, earned him this prestigious recognition. His achievements have solidified his place as one of the Philippines’ top athletes.

The PSA Awards Night, set for January 27 at the Manila Hotel, will honor Yulo and other outstanding athletes for their contributions to sports. Yulo’s selection for this award was unanimous among sportswriters, recognizing his remarkable success at the international level.

Yulo began his gymnastics journey in Manila before training in Japan under a scholarship from the Japan Olympic Association. His hard work culminated in an associate degree in literature from Teikyo University in 2022. Yulo has accumulated numerous accolades, including six medals in world championships and ten Asian titles.

At the Paris Olympics, Yulo impressed judges with flawless routines, earning a perfect score in the floor exercise and another top score in the vault. His Olympic triumphs added to his growing list of accomplishments, which also includes nine Southeast Asian Games championships.

Yulo’s recognition as Athlete of the Year highlights his dedication to the sport and the impact he has had on Philippine gymnastics. He continues to inspire young athletes, both in the Philippines and globally.

Beyond his athletic career, Yulo has also served his country as a member of the Philippine Navy Reserve Force. His involvement in both sports and community service exemplifies his commitment to his nation.

The PSA Awards Night will celebrate Yulo’s achievements and those of other Filipino athletes. This event underscores the importance of supporting local talent and inspiring future generations of athletes.

Yulo remains focused on future competitions, continuing to train in hopes of maintaining his position as one of the world’s top gymnasts. His dedication and talent make him a formidable presence in international sports.
