Central Texas homeowners urged to act fast amid mold threat

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Over the past two weeks, floods have destroyed or severely damaged hundreds—possibly thousands—of homes across Central Texas. Now, experts are warning homeowners to act fast to prevent mold growth in the region’s hot, humid conditions.

“Mold spreads fast once it starts growing, and it can get really bad,” said TJ McAvoy, a member of the veteran-led disaster relief group Team Rubicon, currently working in Kerr County.

“This isn’t the kind of mold you find on old leftovers,” McAvoy explained. “This mold is different—it thrives in Texas humidity.”

Team Rubicon has focused on clearing out flooded homes to stop mold from taking hold. McAvoy stressed the importance of immediate action: “Get the sheet rock out. Get the insulation out. Get the carpet out. Get everything out so we can spray bleach to stop the mold.”

“If we can stop that mold from spreading, homeowners can start rebuilding from one of their worst moments,” he added.

Josh Lasch, with The Steam Team, an Austin-based water damage restoration company, said mold can start growing within 48 to 72 hours of flooding—especially in uncooled, high-humidity environments like those common in Central Texas summers.

He urged homeowners to consult a mold specialist as soon as possible. “It’s not just about protecting your health,” Lasch said. “It’s also about preserving your home’s value.”
