MANILA — The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) on Friday cautioned the public and political actors against using former Ako Bicol representative Zaldy Co’s allegations for political gain and called for due process in addressing the issue.

In a statement, the CBCP said Church leaders issued the warning after noting that the allegations surfaced during a sensitive period that could influence public sentiment and affect political dynamics. The conference said the timing could disrupt public discourse and urged all groups to avoid turning the controversy into a partisan tool.

The bishops called on authorities to conduct an investigation through proper legal channels and to ensure fair treatment for all individuals involved. They appealed to Filipinos to remain calm while competent institutions review Co’s claims and to avoid spreading unverified information that could heighten tensions.

The CBCP urged media organizations to report on the matter with accuracy and context to help the public distinguish between allegations and verified facts.

Church officials stressed that they do not support efforts to use religious influence or moral authority to advance political positions linked to Co’s statements.
