Catriona Gray spoke publicly for the first time about her ended engagement with actor Sam Milby, describing how she was “shattered” when he realized he was not ready for the level of commitment the couple had planned.
The beauty queen-actress shared her story in a vlog interview with broadcast journalist Karen Davila, initially aired on YouTube on Feb. 12 and reuploaded the following day after briefly being removed.
Gray recounted their four-year relationship and the moment she learned that Milby, who had previously proposed, was no longer ready to take their relationship further.
“There was a point where I think he just realized that he wasn’t ready to take it to the stage of commitment that we thought we were on,” Gray said. “A few months later, he realized that hindi pala siya ready. That was very hurtful for me, and I was really blindsided at the time.”
She added that she had put in significant effort to make the relationship work, motivated by her genuine love for Milby.
“Pero it got to a point na, at that age and what we’ve been through, kung hindi ka pa rin sure, I think that’s an answer already,” she said.
Gray called the decision to end the engagement one of the hardest choices she has made, emphasizing her desire for a partnership built on mutual commitment.
“At the end of the day, if it’s not a relationship that is two-way—and also, as a woman, I want to have a family. I want to get married and I’d love to be a mom someday. So, I really want a partner who values me and sees that future with me, too,” she said.
Gray described the heartbreak as a learning experience, noting that therapy helped her navigate the emotional aftermath.
“I was really shattered… I didn’t want to talk about it kasi ang sakit niya e. I was so broken that I was just like, ‘Please let me grieve,’” she recalled.
She credited two years of therapy for helping her reconnect with herself and her close friends. “I feel like I came back home to myself. The version of me now, I’m the healthiest I’ve ever been,” she said.
Despite the past heartbreak, Gray remains optimistic about love. She revealed she is currently dating a non-showbiz partner, whose identity she has kept private.
“I definitely believe in love. I think if you have a bad experience with a guy or two, you shouldn’t allow that to reframe or change how you see love,” she said.
Gray and Milby’s engagement became public in February 2023, and their breakup was confirmed in 2025.
