PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — Cambodian authorities have arrested more than 2,100 individuals in a recent crackdown on online scam centers, the country’s information minister announced Friday.
Police detained at least 500 suspects over Thursday and Friday in Kandal province near Phnom Penh, as well as in the northeastern province of Stung Treng. These arrests raised the total number apprehended since the campaign began on June 27 to 2,137.
The operation targeted fraudulent scam centers involving foreign nationals. Among those arrested are individuals from Vietnam, Indonesia, China, Korea, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.
The Cambodian government has pledged to maintain its efforts to dismantle illegal scam operations within its borders.
Reports have emerged alleging human rights abuses linked to these centers, but the government emphasized its commitment to addressing and mitigating illicit activities.
