The Biden administration has declared an extension of temporary legal status for close to a million immigrants originating from El Salvador, Sudan, Ukraine, and Venezuela, providing them with a pathway to remain in the United States under specific conditions.
The decision encompasses the extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for these immigrant groups.
This status is granted to individuals from nations with intense difficulties like conflict, environmental disasters, or other extraordinary conditions that make it unsafe for them to return home.
With the extension, immigrants from these countries are temporarily safeguarded from deportation and are granted the legal right to work in the United States.
According to official figures, there are approximately 1 million individuals who have sought refuge in the United States from these aforementioned countries.
They will now experience an extended period of protected status. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas emphasized the administration’s commitment to safeguarding vulnerable individuals who cannot return to their countries safely.
