BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — Election officials in Bexar County have cleared a major voter registration backlog, ensuring readiness for the upcoming early voting period.
The backlog had left tens of thousands of applications pending after a temporary halt in processing due to a surge of last-minute submissions.
County officials announced on October 18, 2023, that the backlog—accumulated over several weeks—was fully resolved. The delay had raised concerns among residents about their eligibility to vote in the upcoming election. Officials attributed the suspension to an overwhelming influx of registration forms near the deadline.
The county’s election office reported an unprecedented rise in new registrations and updates to existing voter records. Staffing limitations and high submission volumes further strained resources. Similar challenges were reported in other Texas counties, according to the Secretary of State’s office, which cited increased political engagement and voter outreach efforts statewide.
To address the issue, Bexar County expanded staffing, extended office hours, and coordinated with state election authorities to speed up processing. County Judge Nelson Wolff commended election workers for ensuring that all eligible voters could participate.
With the backlog cleared, residents are encouraged to verify their registration status and confirm polling locations ahead of early voting. Officials continue to promote voter education through outreach campaigns and partnerships with local organizations.
The Texas Secretary of State’s office continues to monitor Bexar County and other regions to ensure transparent and efficient voter registration processes. County officials said they remain committed to maintaining a secure and accessible election for all voters.
