MUNICH, Germany — Bayern Munich midfielder Lennart Karl, 17, said on Sunday that Real Madrid is his “dream club,” sparking reactions from fans and critics while reaffirming his commitment to Bayern.
Karl made the comments during a question-and-answer session at a fan event, a traditional New Year’s visit by Bayern players to local supporters. “Bayern’s a very, very big club in any case, and it’s a dream to play there, but some day I’d definitely like to go to Real Madrid. That’s my dream club, but that stays between us,” he said, according to Sky Sport Germany.
The Bayern youth academy product emphasized that he values his current club. “But obviously Bayern is something very, very special and it’s lots and lots of fun at the club,” Karl added.
Karl, who became Bayern’s youngest scorer in the Champions League in October, has scored six goals in 22 games this season. He made his first-team debut in June during a 10-0 win over Auckland City at the Club World Cup.
While fans at the event responded with laughter, some Bayern supporters criticized Karl online for suggesting interest in another club.
