TALACOGON, Agusan del Sur — Thousands of family members, friends and supporters gathered Saturday to mark the 40th day since the death of Ateneo student-athlete Rene Clert “Bobet” Baterbonia, as his family renewed its call for prayers and justice while authorities continue investigating the drowning incident that claimed his life.

During a memorial Mass at the Labnig Municipal Cemetery, Baterbonia’s mother, Rovelyn, appealed for continued prayers and accountability over the death of her 18-year-old son.

“If you can open our hearts, there is a big wound that can never be healed,” she said.

Supporters responded with chants of “Hustisya!” during the gathering.

Organizers estimated that about 3,000 people from different parts of Mindanao attended the memorial.

Among those present was Baby Ruth Lozano, who traveled with fellow alumni of Cabadbaran Institute’s Class of 1979 from Agusan del Norte.

“It was overwhelming to see how many people came here to remember him,” Lozano said.

Supporters also offered hundreds of floral arrangements and plants, including donations sent from different parts of the Philippines and overseas.

Talacogon Vice Mayor Elvin Maligsa said the local government spent three days preparing for the memorial and coordinated with supporters to ensure the orderly conduct of the event.

In his homily, Butuan Diocese Chancellor Fr. Rances Oñes described the 40th day memorial as a symbol of preparation, transition and hope, citing biblical accounts associated with the number 40.

Baterbonia, a native of Talacogon, was a former Ateneo de Davao University standout who recently joined the Ateneo de Manila University men’s basketball team.

He and teammate Divine Adili of Nigeria died during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora, on June 8.

Authorities said post-mortem examinations found that both athletes died from asphyxia due to drowning. Government agencies continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the safety measures observed during the activity.

Baterbonia helped lead the Davao Region boys’ basketball team to the 2025 Palarong Pambansa championship and earned the tournament’s Most Valuable Player award.

His family said they will continue seeking prayers as authorities pursue the investigation into the deaths of the two student-athletes.
