Austin, Texas – Austin Police Department officials on Wednesday reported that the city has recorded fewer homicides so far in 2025 compared with recent years, as investigators continue to work on two open homicide cases that remain unsolved.

Department leaders said homicide detectives track all homicide incidents that occur within Austin city limits and analyze trends to determine where and how killings happen each year.

Officials said the latest 2025 homicide data follow several years in which the city recorded rising violence and increases in the annual homicide count.

Police officials said investigators continue to gather evidence, interview witnesses, and review forensic results in the two unsolved 2025 homicide cases.

Investigators said they coordinate with other APD units and outside agencies when they identify information that may connect local homicide cases to incidents in other jurisdictions.

Homicide unit supervisors said detectives prioritize open cases based on available leads, threat assessments, and the likelihood that new investigative steps can identify suspects.

Police officials said they update homicide statistics regularly and share information with city leaders, prosecutors, and community stakeholders.

Officials said detectives use case reviews and data analysis to adjust investigative strategies and deployment of resources in response to changing homicide trends.

The department said it maintains public tip lines and online reporting tools that allow residents to share information that may help solve homicide cases, including the two investigations that remain open in 2025.

Police officials said they release public bulletins when they determine that sharing suspect descriptions, vehicle information, or surveillance images can assist in identifying individuals connected to homicide investigations.

The department said it works with victim services counselors to provide support and information to families affected by homicide while detectives pursue leads in each case.

Officials said they plan to present a more detailed breakdown of 2025 homicide statistics, including victim demographics, locations, and suspected motives, in an upcoming public safety briefing.

Homicide unit supervisors said they continue to review historical data from prior years of rising violence to identify factors that may relate to the recent decline in homicides.

Police officials said they will continue to investigate every homicide case in 2025 until they identify suspects, present findings to prosecutors, and close the cases in accordance with department procedures.
