AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin City Council on Thursday approved amendments to the city’s density bonus program, aiming to expand affordable housing options amid rising rents and a growing population.
The revised program offers developers increased building height and density in exchange for including affordable housing units in new projects.
City officials said the changes are intended to incentivize more participation from the private sector while addressing the city’s affordability crisis.
Council members emphasized the need for continued evaluation and potential future adjustments based on the program’s impact.
“The changes are a step forward in creating a more equitable housing landscape,” said a city spokesperson. City staff will oversee compliance, and implementation is expected to begin shortly.
Local housing organizations have expressed support for the revisions and plan to work with the city to help meet strategic housing goals.
