At least 10 FBI employees who worked on the federal investigation into former President Donald Trump’s handling of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate were fired Wednesday, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.

The dismissed employees had been assigned to support former Special Counsel Jack Smith, who oversaw the probe into Trump’s retention of classified records after leaving the White House. Investigators examined government documents recovered from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property in Palm Beach, Florida, and assessed whether laws governing the preservation, storage, and handling of classified materials were violated.

The firings affected agents, analysts, and support staff who participated in investigative work, records review, and case support. Authorities have not publicly identified the employees or detailed their specific roles.

Internal notices circulated within parts of the bureau Wednesday informing units that several staff members connected to the Mar-a-Lago documents case were no longer employed. The FBI did not disclose the reasons for the dismissals.

Sources said the action targeted personnel who worked on specific portions of the classified records investigation. It was unclear whether the decision resulted from an internal review, administrative action, or other factors. The scope of the firings did not appear to include all FBI personnel involved in Trump-related investigations.

The FBI and the Justice Department did not respond to requests for comment. Officials have not said whether the dismissals will affect related or ongoing cases.
