LAGOS, Nigeria — Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua posted a public update on Sunday following a car crash in Nigeria that killed his strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami, and trainer Latif “Latz” Ayodele.
Joshua shared a photo on Instagram showing him with his mother and three women, one holding a framed photo. He captioned the post: “My Brothers Keeper,” accompanied by two heart emojis.
The crash occurred Monday when the vehicle carrying Joshua and his friends struck a stationary truck near Lagos. Joshua sustained minor injuries and was discharged from a hospital on Wednesday. Ghami and Ayodele died in the collision.
British media reported that Joshua had returned to the U.K. ahead of the funerals, which were held on Sunday. Hours before the crash, Joshua and Ayodele shared clips on social media of them playing table tennis.
The driver of the car, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been charged with dangerous and reckless driving, with his trial set for Jan. 20.
Joshua, who has Nigerian roots and briefly attended boarding school in the country as a child, also holds Nigerian nationality. Former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury announced on Sunday that he is coming out of retirement, sparking speculation about a potential fight with Joshua, who has not commented on his boxing future.
