LONDON — Alex Eala said she will use her fourth-round exit at Wimbledon as motivation to improve after falling to Jasmine Paolini in three sets, ending the Filipino’s deepest run at the Grand Slam tournament.
Paolini defeated Eala, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, to advance to the Wimbledon quarterfinals. After the match, Eala said the contest highlighted the narrow differences that separate the world’s top-ranked players.
“Of course there are things that I would have liked to do differently,” Eala said. “Every match is different. You’re always finding solutions, and the opponent is always finding ways to make you uncomfortable.”
Eala credited Paolini’s experience for capitalizing on key moments and limiting her opportunities despite several break-point chances.
“I think Jasmine did that pretty well today,” Eala said. “She really went for her shots. She definitely made me feel uncomfortable in certain moments of the match.”
The 21-year-old acknowledged that her serve was not as effective as it had been earlier in the tournament but said inconsistent performances are part of professional tennis.
“My serve was not as good today as maybe other matches,” she said. “Everyone has days where they don’t play their best tennis.”
Despite the defeat, Eala said she was pleased with how she managed the match and remained committed to her game plan.
“I’m really proud of how I handled things,” she said. “I just have to move forward and continue with my progress.”
Eala’s Wimbledon campaign added to a breakthrough season in which she has compiled a 7-4 record against top-10 opponents. She said her match against Paolini showed that success at the highest level often depends on executing in crucial moments.
“It’s very fine details,” Eala said. “With matches that are tight, it sometimes can depend on one point or two. I think it’s how you manage yourself during those moments.”
