MANILA, Philippines — Alex Eala and Ukrainian partner Nadiia Kichenok advanced to the Guangzhou Open doubles quarterfinals on Thursday after defeating Tang Qianhui of China and Emily Appleton of the United Kingdom, 6-4, 6-2.
Eala and Kichenok trailed 1-2 in the second set before taking five straight games to close out the match. The appearance marks Eala’s return to doubles competition since Wimbledon in July.
The win places the pair in the tournament’s final eight as they seek to progress further in the draw. Eala’s continued participation in international events is closely followed in the Philippines as she builds her career on the global tennis circuit.
