Flight delays worsen as air traffic controller shortage deepens during shutdown

A shortage of air traffic controllers resulting from the ongoing government shutdown has caused widespread flight delays across the United States.

At least 11 major airports, including Nashville International Airport, are experiencing disruptions in flight schedules as limited staffing slows air traffic operations.

Reports indicate that reduced personnel in control towers have created coordination challenges, leading to delays and cancellations affecting domestic and international routes.

At Nashville International Airport, passengers voiced frustration over extended waiting times and uncertainty surrounding departures. Airlines advised travelers to monitor updates and confirm flight details before proceeding to the airport.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stated it continues to oversee the situation and implement measures to minimize disruptions. The agency emphasized that safety remains the top priority throughout the staffing shortage.

Airlines have adjusted schedules, processed rebookings, and provided updates to passengers, though disruptions are expected to persist until the shutdown concludes.

Businesses dependent on air transport have reported delivery setbacks, while hotels near major airports have accommodated stranded travelers affected through flight delays.

Officials said flight operations are expected to stabilize once government funding resumes and air traffic control facilities regain full staffing levels.
