NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said on Saturday that the league has held talks with French football club Paris Saint-Germain in Europe in recent weeks about how PSG could participate in a planned NBA-backed European basketball league that the organization aims to launch in 2027 in partnership with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).
Silver said the NBA began formal work on the European project last year and he added that the league continues to discuss investment, structure, and participation with several major clubs and financial backers in Europe.
He said PSG recently joined the list of football clubs that have expressed interest in possible involvement in the proposed competition, which the NBA has tentatively framed as a pan-European basketball league separate from its North American championship.
Silver said during his current trip to London and Berlin that he has met multiple potential investors and club executives as the NBA evaluates commercial models, governance, and competitive formats for the new league.
He confirmed that the NBA has also held discussions with Spanish football club Real Madrid regarding the proposed European basketball competition during meetings arranged around the league’s activities in Berlin.
Silver said the NBA continues to coordinate with FIBA on regulatory, calendar, and sanctioning issues for the planned 2027 launch, and he noted that the partnership with the world governing body remains central to the project’s development.
He said the NBA has not yet announced a final list of participating clubs or cities and he added that negotiations with interested organizations, including PSG and Real Madrid, remain ongoing.
Silver said he expects additional European football and basketball clubs to enter talks with the NBA and FIBA as planning for the 2027 European league progresses.
