Austin, Texas — Governor Greg Abbott on Thursday announced a $146 billion transportation infrastructure plan aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving road safety across Texas.

The initiative of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), represents one of the largest investments in the state’s history.

The comprehensive plan is part of the Unified Transportation Program (UTP), which outlines infrastructure projects for the next decade. It focuses on expanding and maintaining highways, enhancing mobility, and supporting Texas’ growing population and economy.

TxDOT will oversee the rollout of the plan, prioritizing high-congestion areas and locations with pressing safety concerns. Projects include highway expansions, road maintenance, and safety upgrades across urban and rural regions.

“This record investment will keep Texas the economic engine of America,” Abbott said in a statement. “By investing in transportation, we’re investing in the future of every Texas community.”

The UTP also includes future-focused strategies to prepare for projected growth in population and vehicle usage. TxDOT plans to collaborate with regional and local authorities to ensure projects align with community needs and long-term infrastructure goals.

The $146 billion program is expected to support economic development by reducing transportation costs and improving access to business centers and freight corridors. State officials say the improvements will benefit daily commuters and commercial transportation alike.

The funding spans a range of transportation initiatives, from rural road improvements to urban highway expansions, all designed to improve traffic flow and safety.

The Unified Transportation Program will guide TxDOT’s project planning through 2034. A full list of proposed projects is expected to be released in the coming weeks.
