Alabama A&M football player Medrick Burnett Jr. has died, according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.

Burnett Jr., a 20-year-old linebacker, sustained a severe head injury during a game in October. The incident occurred during the Magic City Classic, a highly anticipated annual matchup.

The game took place in Birmingham, Alabama, where Burnett Jr. was playing for the Alabama A&M Bulldogs.

He collided with an opposing player, leading to the injury that proved fatal. The young athlete was immediately taken to a local hospital and received medical care for over a month. Despite the medical team’s efforts, Burnett Jr. succumbed to his injuries on a Wednesday evening at UAB Hospital.

The Magic City Classic is known for its intense competition, drawing thousands of fans to watch Alabama A&M face off against Alabama State University. This particular game, however, became a tragic event, with the young player’s injury casting a shadow over the proceedings.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed the death of Burnett Jr. following the incident. Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Matt Angelo issued a report stating that Burnett Jr. died at 5:43 p.m. The cause of death was related to the head injury sustained during the game.

Burnett Jr. was known for his dedication to the sport and was considered a rising star in collegiate football.

After the injury, initial reports incorrectly stated that Burnett Jr. had died, causing confusion. Alabama A&M later clarified that the athlete was still alive and in stable condition at the time. The news of his eventual passing has left many in disbelief.

The head coach of the Alabama A&M Bulldogs, Connell Maynor, expressed his condolences to Burnett Jr.’s family. He praised the young player’s talent and commitment, saying he had a bright future ahead of him. Maynor noted that the team is deeply affected by the loss, and plans are underway to honor Burnett Jr.’s memory.

Burnett Jr.’s family has requested privacy during this difficult time. They have not made any public statements but are reportedly devastated by the loss of their son. Members of the Alabama A&M athletic department have reached out to offer support and condolences.

The tragic death of Burnett Jr. has sparked conversations about player safety in college football. Concerns have been raised about the adequacy of the protective gear and protocols in place to safeguard athletes from such injuries. The NCAA is expected to review these aspects in light of this incident, though no official comment has been made.

Alabama A&M University has announced plans to hold a memorial service for Burnett Jr. on campus. The service will provide an opportunity for students, faculty, and fans to celebrate his life and achievements. Details of the memorial are yet to be finalized.
