HOUSTON, TEXAS – Nearly six million Texans are expected to travel during the Fourth of July holiday period, marking a record high for the state, according to AAA Texas.

AAA Texas reported that approximately 5.9 million residents will travel 50 miles or more from home, a 3.4% increase over last year. This figure is the highest since the organization began tracking holiday travel data.

Road travel remains the most common method, with about 4.7 million Texans expected to drive to their destinations. This represents around 80% of the total number of holiday travelers in the state.

Air travel is also on the rise, with an estimated 570,000 Texans projected to fly—an increase of 6% from 2023. The rise in air travel aligns with nationwide trends following the easing of pandemic-related restrictions and growing demand.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) advised motorists to plan ahead, warning of heavy traffic on major highways. Drivers are urged to check for road closures, obey speed limits, and wear seatbelts.

In preparation for the holiday surge, Houston airports, including George Bush Intercontinental and William P. Hobby, are implementing enhanced security measures and deploying additional staff.

Airlines operating in Texas have increased flight availability and recommend that travelers arrive early.

Law enforcement agencies across the state will conduct increased patrols during the holiday period. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is urging motorists to avoid impaired driving and designate sober drivers when necessary.

Travelers are also encouraged to book accommodations in advance, as hotels and rentals in popular destinations are nearing full occupancy.

The National Weather Service has forecast scattered thunderstorms across parts of Texas, which could impact travel plans.
