WASHINGTON, D.C.– The White House has announced a plan to modernize the United States air traffic control system by 2028. The proposal includes building six new air traffic control centers and upgrading technology at existing facilities.
The initiative is expected to cost more than $12.5 billion. The upgrades will involve installing new hardware and software to improve communication, navigation, and surveillance systems.
The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee has reviewed the proposal. While the plan has received support from aviation industry groups, the administration has not yet detailed how the project will be funded.
The plan also includes training programs for air traffic control personnel to operate the upgraded systems.
Officials said the overhaul is intended to improve safety, reduce delays, and enhance air traffic management. Recent incidents involving airspace coordination and communication delays have underscored the need for modernization.
