Houston Mayor John Whitmire introduced the city’s proposed 2026 budget on Tuesday, outlining approximately $290 million in cuts while maintaining that city services will remain unaffected.

The $3 billion general fund budget allocates nearly 60% to the police and fire departments. Mayor Whitmire emphasized that essential services, including public safety and core city operations, will be preserved despite reductions across various departments.

The budget proposal will require approval from the City Council. City officials are expected to review the plan in the coming weeks, with public input to be gathered through scheduled community sessions.

According to Houston Public Media, the proposal aims to balance fiscal responsibility with maintaining service quality. City leaders have stated that strategic planning has enabled cost reductions without diminishing service levels.

The mayor’s office has described the proposal as a reflection of the city’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and efficient resource management. Budget details are available on the city’s official website.
