MANILA, Philippines– The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) expressed its condolences following the death of Pope Francis, who passed away on Monday in the Vatican due to a stroke and heart failure.

Regional leaders honored the Pope’s contributions to peace and reconciliation efforts in Mindanao, calling his support a vital part of his global legacy.

In an official statement, BARMM extended sympathy to the Catholic Church, the local Catholic community in the Bangsamoro region, and people around the world mourning the Pope’s passing.

Officials acknowledged his moral leadership and his outreach across faiths, particularly in conflict-affected areas such as Mindanao.

Pope Francis was a vocal supporter of the peace process in the southern Philippines.

During his 2015 visit to the country, he publicly endorsed efforts toward reconciliation and inclusive dialogue in the region. His encouragement came at a time of ongoing negotiations and nation-wide discussions on autonomy and long-term peace.

“The Bangsamoro government will always remember His Holiness for his compassion, wisdom, and commitment to justice,” BARMM officials said. “His support strengthened our resolve to pursue peace based on mutual understanding and respect.”

BARMM leaders noted that Pope Francis’s messages of unity and peaceful coexistence resonated deeply with communities in the region, including those affected by decades of armed conflict. His influence, they said, reached beyond religious lines and helped foster greater interfaith understanding.

As the region continues its transition and peacebuilding efforts, Bangsamoro officials said they will carry forward the spirit of dialogue and compassion championed by Pope Francis. The regional government is set to hold interfaith prayers in his memory.
