Government sets sights on potatoes as rice alternative

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Agriculture (DA) has formed specialized teams to implement the Sustainable Potato Program (SPP), an initiative aimed at modernizing potato farming and increasing farmers’ income through technology and advanced agricultural practices.

Under Special Order No. 596, the DA established a Program Management Group (PMG) and a Technical Working Group (TWG) to lead the program.

Originally launched in 2019, the SPP seeks to transform the potato farming sector by introducing modern tools, techniques, and support systems for local farmers.

In partnership with stakeholders including Universal Robina Corporation (URC), the DA is working to build reliable seed systems and improve farm productivity. The five-year agreement with URC focuses on strengthening infrastructure and capacity in the potato industry.

By shifting traditional farming methods toward modern, science-based practices, the department aims to improve efficiency, raise crop yields, and enhance the livelihoods of farmers.

Recent efforts include the distribution of free high-quality seed tubers in key potato-growing regions such as Nueva Vizcaya. This measure is intended to lower input costs for farmers while improving the quality of produce.

Through the Sustainable Potato Program, the Department of Agriculture aims to foster a more resilient, productive, and profitable agricultural sector for Filipino farmers.
